Perhaps no. The root area of the abutments should be more than that of the pontic. So ideally the lateral must be included.

Besides at least theoritically we are supposed to provide a canine protected occlusion. So there are always heavy stresses on the canine.

So be careful . Weigh the pros and cons carefully before proceeding

besides if one doesnt want to include lateral for estthetic reasons we can use the molar and premolar as abutments
