https://demo.discussdentistry.com/forums/topic/oreuk/#post-11186 <![CDATA[ORE(UK)]]> https://demo.discussdentistry.com/forums/topic/oreuk/#post-11186 Fri, 04 Jan 2013 05:29:17 +0000 The GDC’s Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) must be passed by graduates whose qualifications are not eligible for registration in the UK.

The ORE is in two parts :

Part One consists of written papers on (i) clinical applied dental science and clinically applied human disease and (ii) aspects of clinical dentistry, law and ethics, and health and safety.
Part Two consists of an examination on a dental manikin, examinations to test clinical skills, diagnostic and treatment planning skills, and a medical emergencies examination.
Candidates applying to sit the ORE must demonstrate that they have at least 1,600 hours clinical experience where they have personally treated patients in the dental chair. This experience can be gained during the undergraduate degree, during post-qualification experience, or a combination of both. Candidates will have to verify this experience by providing references from University Dental Deans or employers.

To practice dentistry in the UK you must hold a full registration with the GDC. You may eventually be able to work as a dentist if you pass the ORE and have the correct visa to remain and work in the UK. The ORE examination is held by the GDC and replaced the International Qualifying Examination (IQE).
IndDEC announces the start of ORE training for both Part 1 & 2 in India.

Dentists in Sea Bright, NJ, were particularly hard hit, and as many as 7,000 dentists in the Long Island, New York City, and Hudson Valley areas were affected by flooding or power outages.

Marty Jablow, DMD, lost power for four days at his general practice in Woodbridge, NJ, and now has sailboats washed up against his vacation townhouse in Sea Bright.

Even so, he feels luckier than others in the area, he told DrBicuspid.com. “I just lost power, but we’re all safe,” he said. “It’s an inconvenience more than anything compared to many people who’ve lost everything.”

Dr. Jablow noted that Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright, where another dentist’s office had been located, was decimated and now has as much as 10 feet of sand piled up.

“Ocean Avenue is just sand; there’s nothing left,” he explained, comparing it to the devastation after Hurricane Katrina in 2005

“I’m lucky. My life goes on without a problem, but the people who live next to me live there full time and will have to relocate,” he said. “A lot of people will have to relocate, and some might not come back because they’ll have to raze lots of buildings and start from scratch.”

Josh Poupore, a spokesman for the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA), said he doesn’t yet know how many members have sustained damage but estimated that half of the group’s members are in areas that were damaged by the storm. He estimated that 6,000 to 7,000 dentists in the Long Island, New York City, and Hudson Valley areas sustained damage.

“A lot of offices were at least flooded or more severely damaged.”
— Josh Poupore, New York State Dental
Association
“A lot of offices were at least flooded or more severely damaged,” he told DrBicuspid.com. “We haven’t heard about anything catastrophic yet, mostly flooding. Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the south shore of Long Island areas were hit the worst.”

Many dentists in Nassau or Suffolk counties on Long Island are still without electricity, Poupore said.

Dental supplier Acteon in Mt. Laurel, NJ, reopened November 1 following the power outage, but Henry Schein, also located in Mt. Laurel, is still without power.

The NYSDA has posted a resource page on its website with information about ADA disaster assistance grants, Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance, and tips on how to deal with water damage to patient records and if dentists are legally responsible for paying employees if the office is closed.

“The problem is so many in the New York metro area have no electricity so their cellphones and computers are running out of power, and they’re trying to get their basements pumped out and getting services back,” Poupore explained. “It’s going to be an ongoing sustained effort, and we’ll continue to do our very best to provide members with the information they need.”

As of November 1, the New Jersey Dental Association headquarters in North Brunswick remained closed due to the storm and its aftereffects

One of 2012’s America’s "Top Dentists" hasn’t practiced a single day of dentistry since his training days were over in 1986.

Dr. Mark Silverberg did graduate from dental school, but instead of becoming a dentist he followed his life’s calling to medical school.

And despite working as a board-certified anesthesiologist, not a dentist, in Chicago for more than twenty years, the Consumers’ Research Council of America– an organization that provides the public with "information guides for professional services"– chose Silverberg to receive top honors in its Guide to America’s Top Dentists.

As part of an ABC News investigation into how "Top Doctor" awards are handed out, Dr. Mark Silverberg sent away $183 and received a "museum grade" wall plaque to showcase his undeserved award. According to the Consumers’ Research Council of America, the plaque was a way to commemorate Dr. Silverberg as "among the nation’s most excellent" dentists.

Dr. Silverberg said, "It’s a sham. I’ve practiced zero days of dentistry in my life- and I still received this award for being one of America’s Top Dentists."

About Consumers’ Research Council of America

Consumers’ Research Council of America offers "Top Doctor" awards across nearly two-dozen specialties including Top Cardiologists, Plastic Surgeons, Obstetricians, Surgeons and Pediatricians.
The organization says doctors are selected based on a point system that considers experience, training, membership in professional associations, and board certification.

Any doctor who earns enough points qualifies to be included on the list. The company first sends doctors a flattering letter congratulating them on their "impressive achievements," and invites them to be included as one of America’s Top Physicians. Doctors are then encouraged by a second company, "State License Documentation"- or SLD- to buy plaques and trophies that cost anywhere from $99 to $530.

The companies claim "no fees, donations, sponsorships, or advertising are accepted," but the small print reveals otherwise.

Mailings obtained by ABC News show that Consumers’ Research Council of America receives money for the award plaques SLD sells to doctors.

And some doctors make a big deal about these awards to attract patients—hanging plaques in waiting rooms, touting awards on their websites and even issuing formal press releases announcing their selection.

Just Who is on Top Doctor Lists?

ABC News uncovered sobering details about the Consumers’ Research Council of America selection and review process.

Their database of "Top Physicians" includes doctors with serious criminal and disciplinary records.

Dr. Conrad Murray, convicted of manslaughter for administering a lethal overdose of the anesthetic propofol to Michael Jackson in 2009, is still listed as a "Top Cardiologist," according to the Consumers’ Research Council of America.

A "Top Pediatrician" according to the Consumers’ Research Council of America is also a convicted serial child rapist charged with the molestation of 103 children. Dr. Earl Bradley is currently serving 14 life sentences in addition to a 160-year prison term, yet he remains on the Consumers’ Research Council of America "Top Pediatrician" list

Ingrid Valdez and her husband, Barry Cosgrove, who live in Laguna Beach, sued Dr. Sherri Worth for dental malpractice in 2010.

Earlier this month, the judgment was approved by Orange County Superior Court Judge Geoffrey Glass after binding arbitration concluded that Worth’s testimony was “not credible.”
“It is a substantial verdict,” said the couple’s San Francisco attorney, Edwin Zinman. “For a dental case, this is one of the larger.”
Worth’s attorney David J. Weiss of Los Angeles, reached late Tuesday, praised her dentistry skills and said he disputed the arbitrator’s findings.
“In terms of her credentials and qualifications, they’re without reproach,” Weiss said. “She’s an excellent doctor.”
According to arbitration documents, Valdez consulted with Worth because she felt her smile looked “gummy,” she had a chipped tooth and her front teeth were discolored. In 2009, Worth put crowns or veneers on 22 teeth. Afterward, Valdez experienced extreme pain and sensitivity.
Cosgrove said in an interview that his wife thought she was receiving veneers, not crowns. They paid Worth $45,000, he said, and have spent $70,000 fixing Valdez’s mouth. He said she has undergone two gum surgeries, eight root canals and lost 20 percent of her body weight because she couldn’t eat.
Worth’s website includes a testimonial from musician Tommy Lee as well as a clip of her with “American Idol” contestant Ace Young. Her other credits include transforming smiles for the plastic surgery shows “The Swan” and “Nip/Tuck.”
“They see ‘The Swan’ and they see this and that,” Cosgrove said. “People are naïve, and we were naïve. People need to have information to make intelligent decisions about their healthcare.”
According to the arbitration documents, Worth argued that Valdez suffered from temporary irritation from the cement used in the procedure.
Arbitrator Joseph Thielen wrote that “the office chart is not reliable, has been rewritten in substantial part, critical evidence has been ‘lost’ or destroyed, and that defendant’s testimony is not credible.”
For instance, the documents say that when a documents expert for Valdez was scheduled to examine medical records and attempt to determine the age of the ink, Worth testified that she spilled a Diet Coke that covered the entirety of every page in question.
The arbitrator wrote that the spill prevented a definitive examination and Worth’s “contrived explanation defies believability.”
He also noted that Worth diagnosed 10 cavities that were not verified by X-rays or photos.
